John was a man of few words. He kept to himself when I was around. I dated his daughter lindsey and I thought a lot of John. I didn’t get to know him very well. But I liked his sense of humor. When I heard about his passing thru Nancy I was devastated and wish I could have went to the memorial service in Murfreesboro. I wish things were different. He will be missed. Love richard.

Gene ( I've always called him Gene vs John since childhood) was a first cousin on my mother's side. My family, living in Charlotte, visited his as we grew up - they went from Cherryville (NC) to Fallston to New London and wound up in Tennessee - his dad (my Uncle Doug) was teaching English and working on his doctorate during these early years. The summer prior to my senior year in high school Gene spent that summer in Charlotte with his grandparents (Aunt Carolyn's parents). He worked at BiLo grocery on the west side of Charlotte and I worked at WinnDixie on the east. We got together once or twice a week to visit. These are the times I remember the most as we didn't see each other much after that summer - I did go to Murfreesboro and stay with his family to visit for about a week or two sometime shortly after I started college ( I remember he had a Honda 50 motorcycle at the time) - I decided to put my college on hold after a year and a half - worked for a time and then decided to join the Navy - we corresponded a couple of times by mail during my tour of duty and afterwards lost touch for the most part. We saw each other at Karen's wedding and years later at Aunt Carolyn's funeral. Gene and I were corresponding by text while he was hospitalized and after he was released and was able to go home, we were hoping to get together again when he felt up to it. It was very sad when he had to go back for another surgery and did not wake up afterward. I have fond memories of our times together, especially when we were growing up.
