Edwin (Joe) Marden passed away peacefully February 15, 2015 at Lakeshore Heartland Nursing Home in Donelson, TN at the age of 86 after a determined and stoic battle with Multiple System Atrophy (MSA). He was a short term resident of Lakeshore Heartland and prior to that he resided at Creekside at Three Rivers Assisted Living in Murfreesboro, TN. He lived outside Atlanta with his wife, Nan, for many years. Joe was born in East Millinocket, Maine, November 20, 1928. He was the only child of Fred and Evelyn (Brown) Marden. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 59 years, Nancy Marden. He was also preceded in death by a special paternal uncle and aunt, Harry and Zelda Marden. He was a US Navy Veteran and completed his BS in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maine-Orono on the GI Bill. He met his future wife, Nan, in Maine and they married in June of 1952 after she completed her BSN degree in nursing from Cornell University-New York Hospital. Joe was employed by International Paper Company (IP) for the first part of his professional career and he held different positions in IP mills and offices located in Corinth, NY, Glen Falls, NY, Ticonderoga, NY, British Columbia, Canada, Camden, AK, and Jay, Maine. He retired from Stone Container Corporation as Division Vice President of Operations Engineering, and continued as a consultant for Stone Container post retirement. In addition to Joe’s commitment to his family and work, he was passionate about the game of golf. He was a ranger at Windemere Golf Course in Georgia, until January 2013. This was a position that provided him with much pleasure and contentment. Survivors include three children, two daughters; Karen and Susan (Wayne) and one son Fred and one granddaughter, Eve. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Dorothy and her children, Eric and Sandy and many beloved cousins on the Marden side of the family. He is also survived by his Maine Coon, Augusta, aka Gus, who provided him with much comfort and entertainment during the past two years. The family would like to thank his caregivers who were watchful and protective of Joe for the past two years at Creekside, the staff at Heartland and Avalon Hospice. In addition, the family is grateful for the care provided by Dr. O. Brad Burns, Dr. Fenna Phibbs at Vanderbilt, Dr. Christiana Mayville of Atlanta, GA, Alison Schlenger, FNP, Jodi Jackson, RN and Kathie Haarala, LPN.
