Emily Washington Brown, 80, passed away March 8, 2011. She was born in Murfreesboro, TN on May 2, 1930, daughter of the late Francis Alfred Washington and Nell Koester Washington of Nashville, TN. She graduated from the old Ward-Belmont School and attended Ward-Belmont College and later Vanderbilt University. Emily was a descendent of several of the founding families of middle Tennessee, with ancestral ties back to the Jamestown settlement. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Murfreesboro, TN, the Optimist Garden Club, and a number of hereditary organizations, including the Col. Hardee Murfree Jamison chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames of the 17th Century, Daughters of the American Colonists and Dames of the Magna Carta. Emily was an avid and talented painter and a master flower show judge who greatly enjoyed reading mysteries. She loved to travel, having visited four continents and many different countries. Emily particularly enjoyed their trips to visit stately homes in England, as well as river trips in Europe and extensive RV traveling in North America, from Alaska to Florida. Her friends treasured her intelligent, outgoing, adventurous and always optimistic outlook on life; her family loved her for her loyal, generous and always loving nature. Preceded in death by her son Robert Derek Brown, Arlington, TX, survivors include: husband Robert Alden Brown, Murfreesboro, TN; daughters Amy Brown Price, Austin, TX and Celia Brown Morse, Franklin, TN; four grandchildren; brother Joe Washington, Las Vegas, NV; sisters Barbara Washington Dismukes and Katherine Washington, both of Murfreesboro, TN. A memorial service in celebration of Emily's life will be at the First Presbyterian Church, Murfreesboro, TN on Saturday, March 19 at 2:00 PM. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until time of service. Interment will be in the Washington-Smith family cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Murfreesboro, TN or to Alive Hospice, Nashville TN.
