Joan S. Smith, 79, of Murfreesboro, passed away Thursday, November 22, 2012 at Community Care of Rutherford County. Mrs. Smith was born in Americus, Georgia to the late Charles Putman Simmons and Dora Elizabeth Riley Simmons. She attended Grace Lutheran Church and was an English Professor at Georgia Southwestern University. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Dr. William L. Smith; son, Charles Luther Smith. She is survived by her son, Riley (Missy) Smith of Murfreesboro and daughter, Marilyn (Michael) Stone of Unionville; grandchildren, Michaela Stone, Max, Charlie and Georgia Smith. Memorial service will be Friday, November 30, 2012 at 5:00 pm at Murfreesboro Funeral Home.
