Chelsea Smith posted a condolence
Saturday, February 24, 2018
I know this space is for condolences, but just in case Mom's full obituary is not added prior to her service, here it is:
On Saturday, February 17, 2018, Cathy Lynn Smith, age 62, moved on suddenly from this life, surrounded by family, friends, and the music of her favorite band, Queen. Cathy will be forever cherished by her husband and best friend, Kerry and their daughter (the Rory to her Lorelai), Chelsea. She is also survived by son Kaleb and two grandchildren and preceded in death by parents Margaret and Frank.
Cathy has always been young at heart, from her adoration of Hello Kitty to her insatiable love for candy, particularly Smarties. She has seen every episode of Star Trek: Voyager probably half a dozen times, but don’t call her a “Trekkie,” because she’s not a nerd.
For more than a decade, Cathy’s “happy place” has been Gatlinburg, TN, after Chelsea recommended the family vacation there following a Science Club trip (you’ll recall that Cathy is NOT a nerd; but she certainly raised one, to her daughter’s delight). Many Gatlinburg adventures followed, where Cathy and Kerry became frequent patrons of the Donut Friar (Cathy, a lifelong donut connoisseur, insisted their pastries were second-to-none) and hosted a variety of wildlife outside their door, including a special visitor on one lucky birthday, who came to be known as “Birthday Bear.” (“Don’t feed the wildlife” signs have always been lost on Cathy, who has never been able to bear to think of them going hungry.) On a related note, Cathy will also be missed terribly by her grand-dog, Lexi, who will forever admire her loving dedication to giving treats and sneaking scraps.
There are not enough words to encapsulate the legacy Cathy has left behind. As a wife, a mother, a friend, and so much more, she has infused the world with incomparable beauty and kindness, integrity and strength, love and wisdom, humor and laughter. She has always insisted that when she makes her final departure, her loved ones are not to be sad, for she will be with them always. They are not to be afraid, as, “Fear exists for one purpose: to be conquered” (Captain Janeway). And they are to go on laughing, on behalf of themselves, as well as Cathy, because, as Charles Dickens says in A Christmas Carol (the movie adaptations of which Cathy has always watched on Christmas Eve), “There is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humor.”
A celebration of Cathy’s life will be held at Murfreesboro Funeral Home on Sunday, February 25, 2018 with visitation at 12:00 pm, followed by the service at 1:00 pm.

Mama, I don't know what one Gilmore Girl is supposed to do without the other. Your Rory is a little lost without her Lorelai.
I'll be okay, because you raised me, and because you're still here, in so many ways, wherever I go. But nobody's hugs are quite like yours, nobody listens quite like you do, and nobody makes me feel quite as loved, and safe, and special, like you always have, seemingly without effort.
Your absence is a tragedy for us all, but I will do my best to carry on for the both of us, to represent you in all that I do. I know that wherever I lead, you will follow, guiding me along my way, and whispering biting sarcastic remarks in my ear when I'm at a loss to come up with my own. ;)
And as I told you in the hospital, despite our differences in beliefs, this is by no means "good-bye." I told you I'd "see you later," and I've seen you every day since, in myself, in others, in the places I've been, the things I've done. And one day, hopefully a long time from now, because I want to make the most of this life you've given me, our ashes will be combined, and we'll be turned loose on this world, together again, to begin a new adventure.
All my love is yours, forever and always. Oy with the poodles already!
