Lucy May Powell Obituary

Lucy May Smith Powell

Born: December 1947

Entered Eternity: October 6, 2025

Lucy May Smith Powell (77), known to many as “Mimi,” passed away peacefully after a short illness on the morning of October 6, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

Lucy was preceded in death by her parents, Richard Noble Smith and Elizabeth “Lucille” Nichols Smith, her sister, Barbara Franklin, and brother-in-law, Don Powell.

Survivors include her devoted husband of over 60 years, Tommy Ray Powell Sr.; sons, Tommy Ray Powell Jr. (Danielle) and Buford Noble Powell (Dawn); sister, Linda Anderson (Jimmy); brother-in-law, Frank Franklin; sister-in-law, Evelyn Powell; five grandchildren, Blake Powell (Lauren), Caleb Powell (Shelby), Parker Powell, Gabriel Powell, and Lexi Powell; four great-granddaughters, Henley, Roo, Harlow, and Porter; and her beloved sweet puppy, Muffy. She also had many nieces and nephews whom she adored, along with numerous neighbors and friends who meant so much to her.

Lucy was born in December 1947 and lived a life filled with kindness, faith, and love for others. Right after high school, at age 17, she married the love of her life, Tommy Ray Powell Sr., and together they shared over 60 years of marriage—a lasting example of love and commitment.

Lucy had a warm and welcoming personality. She never met a stranger and had a way of making everyone feel valued, cared for, and accepted—with a hug when she met you and another before you left. Her friendships were genuine, her support constant, and her love for family unwavering.

She enjoyed simple pleasures—crocheting, quilting, spending time on the porch watching sunsets over the lake, riding around the countryside with Tommy, and enjoying her favorite treats like Goo Goo Clusters, licorice, and root beer. Lucy also loved watching Hallmark movies, going to the movies, and thrift shopping. One of her greatest joys was spending time with her grandchildren, including riding the four-wheeler and golf cart named Lula Belle with Lexi. She also loved tending to her flowers, which reflected her bright and caring spirit. Lucy looked forward to going to church and spending time with her church friends.

Lucy expressed her joy in life through her colorful clothing styles and love of jewelry. Above all, she was a woman of strong Christian faith whose kindness, generosity, and forgiving nature touched everyone around her.

She will be deeply missed for her hugs, her laughter, and her positive outlook. No matter how much pain she was in, her smile would put everyone at ease. While her family and friends mourn her loss, they find comfort in knowing that Mimi is now at peace in the Lord’s presence and reunited with loved ones who went before her.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at New Zion Church of Christ, 12083 New Zion Road, Christiana, TN 37037. Come and go, or stay from 12:00 noon until 5:00 p.m., with an open mic for those wishing to share a memory beginning at 4:00 p.m. Since Lucy loved bright colors, attendees are encouraged to dress in vibrant colors in her honor. There will be a memory box for fond memories to share with the family. This will not be a funeral but a celebration of a life well lived—and a homecoming 77 years in the making.

Written memories are the best way to help the family, but if you are wanting to give in lieu of flowers, Lucy worked at and was so thankful for the work done feeding those in need at the MIDLAND JOURNEY OF HOPE

3109 Midland Fosterville Rd. Bell Buckle, TN 37020. Donation checks in her memory can be sent to that address.
