Q: What will you never forget about John?
A: There was a favorite saying Dad shared often. When he was struggling with things as.a.child, his mother would ask if he did his best and then said "angels can do no more".

I remember one Christmas eve, the children were asleep. I watched as Bill, (John), put a toy train together under the tree. We had four children born within five years, so Christmas was big & loud. I can close my eyes & still see him. Bill's illness robbed him of so much but he fought hard to make a difference & his light shines on within our hearts.

Q: How would you describe John to someone who had never met them?
A: I want to say, Thank you for being one of my best friends these last 5 years, I will miss you dearly! Thank you for sharing your unique lense in which you viewed this world. You never cared about material things but were capable of being a very wealthy man. You helped all that knew you to appreciate the true riches of time spent with each other, helping those in need, and sharing the hope and guidance of God's word in the Bible to all those suffering and in need. Thank you for sharing your colorful character and wisdom with me all these years. Dad, I will always love you! Kim

There are a countless sweet and silly memories of pawpaw but I want to share one that highlights who he was as a person. I remember somewhere around 2016 I was driving my pawpaw somewhere and we passed a homeless person and he had me pull over so that he could give them some money and he turned to me afterward and said “ people will tell you not to give the homeless money, that they will go and spend it on alcohol or whatever but don’t you think that them of all people deserve a drink?”
From then on, I never hesitate to give the homeless money, if I had a beer I’d give that to them too.

My Pawpaw.
I always believe he was touched by something special. One of the greatest minds of his generation, for sure. He thought for himself and didn’t conform.
He was generous. And not materialistic in the slightest. I can honestly say that my Pawpaw gave me his last 20 dollars to me for gas.
The last 3 years I have spent with my Pawpaw are something I will cherish for the rest of my life. I can’t wait to talk to my son about his pawpaw when he gets older. The man who gave me a job that I could bring my baby to so that I didn’t have to put him in daycare. I couldn’t have done it with him. Atlas and I are going to miss you so much. We all are.

Mr. Kuhlman, that's how we always addressed him, taught me third and fourth year Latin at Father Ryan. He was a brilliant teacher. We translated all 12 books of the Aeneid my senior year. Forty or so lines a night, with sight translation during class. I kept my "pony" for years. Mr. Kuhlman, "arma virumque cano!" RIP.

Bill lived a life of strength, wisdom, and kindness, touching countless hearts along the way. His dedication to education, service, and faith shaped the lives of many, leaving behind a legacy of integrity and compassion. To his family and friends, he was a source of unwavering love and support, always ready to uplift and encourage.
Though he has moved beyond this world, his presence remains in the lessons he shared, the lives he guided, and the love he gave so freely. His journey may be complete, but his impact will never fade. In moments of reflection, in the quiet comfort of memories, and in the light of each new day, Bill’s spirit endures, reminding us that love and kindness are the truest markers of a life well-lived.
