I met Caleb when I was 19- almost 25 years ago. At the time I didn't have any clue who I was and I was really in a phase of just trying to figure it out. When I met Caleb in Murfreesboro I had never met anyone like him. He was confident, cool, relaxed and easy going in a way that was truly magical and unique. I ended up driving back and forth from Philadelphia to Murfreesboro to hang out with him at the Red Rose Cafe. He made me feel deeply loved and even admired, which I can only hope I returned to him. Caleb was always somewhat of a mystery to me but we stayed close for several years and drifted apart as young people often do. I heard from Caleb via mail a few years back with an envelope full of pictures from our times together. He wrote me a sweet note and I thought about him fondly all over again. I wish I had gotten to know him better as an adult as he sounds like he really made a huge difference in the lives of those around him. I am so sorry for everyone who was close to him as this loss must feel so very heavy, my heart is heavy feeling like I've missed any future of knowing Caleb again. Sending love to his family and close friends.

Caleb was biking with me when I was hit by a car. It was a confounding hit and run. For days and then weeks, I was in the Neurological ICU, dazed and hurting, when Caleb walked in. He didn’t just visit—he took care of things. He made sure my bike was picked up, tried to salvage my favorite vintage jeans, and when they couldn’t be saved, he brought me overalls. He sat beside me, his hand in mine, steady and warm. He didn’t have to say much—I just knew he was there, and that meant everything.

For Grief by John O’Donohue
When you lose someone you love,
Your life becomes strange,
The ground beneath you becomes fragile,
Your thoughts make your eyes unsure;
And some dead echo drags your voice down
Where words have no confidence.
Your heart has grown weary with loss;
And though this loss has wounded others too,
No one knows what has been taken from you
When the silence of absence deepens.
Flickers of guilt kindle regret
For all that was left unsaid or undone.
There are days when you wake up happy;
Again inside the fullness of life,
Until the moment breaks
And you are thrown back
Onto the black tide of loss.
Days when you have your heart back,
You are able to function well
Until in the middle of work or encounter,
Suddenly with no warning,
You are ambushed by grief.
It becomes hard to trust yourself.
All you can depend on now is that
Sorrow will remain faithful to itself.
More than you, it knows its way
And will find the right time
To pull and pull the rope of grief
Until the coiled hill of tears
Has reduced to its last drop.
Gradually, you will learn acquaintance
With the invisible form of your departed;
And when the work of grief is done,
The wound of loss will heal
And you will have learned
To wean your eyes
From the gap in the air
And be able to enter the hearth
In your soul where your loved one
Has awaited your return
All the time.
-The late, poet, philosopher and holy man, John O’Donohue.

Although I did not know my cousin Caleb, his parents mean the world to me. I am blessed to read about him in the obituary. What a loss of talent and kindness to this world! Reminds me of my dear Uncle Jimmy Andrews who also passed way too young. My heart is broken for his loved one’s. I’m sure he is designed beautiful robes for us in heaven and looking after children who await their loved ones in heaven. May his memory be eternal!

Caleb came to dinner once at our house and made such a positive impression -- he was a vibrant, witty, fun, and intelligent man. The whole room was drawn to him. He was also so considerate and caring. I'm lighting a candle because his passing is truly the snuffing of a light in this world.
