Charles Wheeler Hord, Sr., age 76, passed away on Monday, October 24, 2016. Mr. Hord was born to Mary Young Wheeler Hord and Thomas Epps Hord, Jr. on February 3, 1940 in Murfreesboro. He was a farmer, preservationist, and historian. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Mary Young Hord Haymore, Louise Hord McCullough, and uncle, John Charles Wheeler. He is survived by his wife, Joy Pratt Hord; daughters, Joy Marchbanks Hord (husband, Neal Cook), and Mary Elizabeth Hord; sons, Charles Wheeler Hord, Jr. (wife, Marla), Benjamin Epps Hord (wife, Barbara); grandchildren, Alex and Ginna Cook, Abigail and Benjamin Hord, Jr., Teddy Anne and Wheeler Hord, III, brother Thomas Epps Hord, III (wife, Betty), and cousin, Benjamin Hord Sikes. Nephews, Scott, Gray, Thomas, Bain, David, Carter and William McCullough, will serve as pallbearers. The family would also like to acknowledge the life-long friendship of Dr. John Dixon. Mr. Hord attended Central High School and received his B.S. Degree in Agriculture from the University of Tennessee. He volunteered for U.S.A.F. immediately after high school and later served in U.S.A.F. National Guard while attending college. He was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity, Florence Community Historical Society, and a member of Wesley Southern Methodist Church. He and his wife and four children lived on Elmwood Farms where he grew up. Elmwood was not simply a business, but his life. He felt it was his duty to protect the wildlife whose life at Elmwood preceded his own. It was his hope that future generations can experience the wonders of nature that God created. The family requests memorials be made to the American Red Cross in Mr. Hord’s memory. There will be a visitation on Saturday, November 5, 2016 from 3 pm until 5 pm at Murfreesboro Funeral Home.
